The First 2005 Run
of the YEAR!!!!
Avalon, Catalina Island
The first SCOPE Catalina Run (March 26th) was a great day
on the water! Most people in SoCal are sick and tired of all the rain and
bad weather we've had all winter. We had
about 15 boats attend and I counted well over 35 people! It turned out to be an incredible day on the water with
beautiful weather and great offshore water. Weather was touch and go all
week, but Saturday turned out great!

We had lunch set up at the Blue Parrot on Crescent with a great view of Avalon Harbor. The weather
was perfect, a mixture of rough and smooth seas with 15 miles visibility on the way over.
The two groups met offshore from the Huntington Beach power station, one
group from Newport and the other from Huntington Harbor. The water
has nice big even swells from Newport to the power station meeting area.
It was the same heading out to the island, but about 1/3 of the way out it
flattened nicely.
As it turns out, about 4 boats were late from Newport....but as the plans
stated.....we left the meeting place nearly on time! The late boats showed
up in Avalon.....well, a little later! As it turns out, everyone made it to
shore about the same time as the "on-duty" shore boat was getting fuel at
the time we showed up!
After the lunch feast many of the group paid a visit to
BIG OLAF'S for the traditional dessert started by Stan Leder some 9 years
ago. Stan wasn't on this trip, but we kept the tradition going followed by
a walk around to the famous Casino and back.
The day in Avalon Catalina also included a few shoppers
and a few libations in Luau Larry's. SCOPE member Chris Prouty also took
some video of a few member boats outside of Avalon in speed runs. We hope to
have a few video clips from that on the site soon.
